Human beings haven’t naturally evolved for regular exercise. Physical activity was crucial for survival in the past, as people had to hunt for food and avoid becoming prey.
Today, our society doesn’t demand physical activity for survival. Therefore exercising can be challenging as it lacks the urgency of survival in ancient times, and relying on motivation alone has its limits.
Here are my personal reasons why exercise is crucial in our modern age:
- Enhanced Memory: Exercise improves memory by boosting brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which aids in creating new synapses for learning and memory. Exercise, therefore, makes it easier to absorb information and form lasting memories.
- Better Sleep: Although the exact ways exercise improves sleep is not fully understood, research suggests it increases deep, restorative slow wave sleep, allowing the brain and body to rejuvenate. Exercise also stabilizes mood, helping to transition to sleep naturally.
- Confidence Boost: Experiencing the body’s capabilities through exercise and feeling the results in previously unexplored muscle groups leads to a profound appreciation of the body as a whole. This newfound appreciation can significantly boost self-confidence.
In today’s world, where physical survival is no longer a daily struggle, exercise offers a different kind of survival that focuses on cognitive abilities, emotional well-being, and self-esteem. Embracing the privilege of exercise improves our quality of life. It empowers us to thrive in a world that demands more than just physical strength for survival.
