Is forgetfulness a sign of a deteriorating brain or a deteriorating body? It’s hard to know when the leading cause of death in Australia is heart disease and the second is dementia. But for women, the leading cause of death is dementia.

It seems unfair that so many women care for others over themselves during their life time, only to later in life forget how to live for them selves.

Dementia is used to describe a group of conditions characterised by the gradual impairment of brain function. It is commonly associated with memory loss, but can affect speech, cognition (thought), behaviour and mobility. [ref: Dementia Australia]

The risk factors for dementia can be greatly reduced with regular exercise, however too many women forget to exercise!

A fascinating study was published by Cambridge University Press: 25 April 2019, and showed that word recall improved in older adults after just one exercise session. Many other studies also support the benefits of exercises on memory.  So why don’t more women exercise?

It’s a hard question to answer because reason is different for every woman. The decision to exercise is personal, and while exercise is hard in the moment,  it is a gift to our future self.
