The ho ho ho anticipation of the holiday season seems a little ho-hum this year with increased anxiety of how to celebrate and maintain a healthy weight.

Weight loss goals are not something I advocate, simply because weight loss is a by-product of healthy lifestyle choices. Weight loss is like the wrapping and ribbon tying of a precious gift. It therefore makes no sense to set a goal for the wrapping, and disregard the gift of fitness.

Trusting the process of WELLth

When we begin a journey in well-being, it is with lifelong intension, and the process starts with daily exercise and wholefood nutrition. However, it is exercise that pairs the intension with the body’s physical need to maintain muscle functionality. It is a very difficult concept to convey to those who have not felt the feel-good of fitness, but making better lifestyle choices is a fail-proof process for weight loss.

Fundamentally the process of weight loss with daily exercise and whole food nutrition is similar to tearing off one sheet of toilet paper per day.  Initially, the roll doesn’t look any different, but over time the roll does shrink. We can trust the process because it is common sense.

How to trust the process of WELLth

When we look at weight loss as a by-product of healthy lifestyle choices, then we can enjoy living with purpose and without regret. We can look forward to our future with the excitement of infinite possibility. Here are 3 ways that will help you in the process of your WELLth.

  1. Be resilient and embrace uncertainty: When faced with adversity, it is hard to trust the process. We may start to think  “why me” and doubt our ability to move forward. In these moments we need to take time to stop our thoughts. Question our self…Why not me? Life happens to all of us, and it’s our responsibility to either rise above our circumstances, or give up. We cannot believe that everything is in our control, change is the only constant. We, as resilient people need to surrender to uncertainty and understand, while we can’t control what happens in our life, we can control how we react.
  2. Focus on the purpose of fitness: When in doubt, focus on the purpose of fitness. Trusting the process is about accepting that hardships will happen along our journey to well being. We need to have confidence that every lesson is bringing us one step closer to embodying our health and fitness. Whether we want to believe it or not, failure and disappointment is a good thing. It is proof that we are trying.
  3. Practice gratitude: Our perspective on life dictates the thoughts that we feel and the decisions that we make. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what we receive in life, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, we acknowledge the goodness in our lives. In the process, we recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside our self. As a result, gratitude helps us to connect to something larger than ourselves – whether to other people, nature, or a higher power.

I will leave you with a thought by Benjamin Hoff, who wrote The Tao of Pooh and encourage you to trust the process for your WELLth.

The honey doesn’t taste so good once it is being eaten. The goal doesn’t mean so much once it is reached; the reward is not so rewarding once it is given.
