Here at Square Box Fitness, we understand the physical benefits of daily exercise. Still, for me, the attraction of exercise is mental health. I believe while we are at home, mental health will take a bigger priority, and it’s the little things that will have a considerable impact.
A simple thing you can do to boost mental health is to take some time out during your day to sit in the sunlight. Skin exposed to sunlight reacts with cholesterol in the skin cells to make Vitamin D for use in the body.
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium needed for bone strength. The body also needs vitamin D to keep the nerves, muscles, and immune system working correctly.
The role vitamin D plays in keeping the immune system healthy is complicated, however, we do know stress weakens the immune system as the body needs to divert resources away from its maintenance to combat stress.
Research has shown, safe sun exposure is about 15 minutes at midday for fair skin people, 3 times per week and longer for darker skin. But first you should speak with your health care professional to see if this is appropriate for you.
Taking time out in the middle of the day to enjoy the sun and practice mindfulness can help reduce stress. This form of relaxation can accelerate the synthesis of vitamin D. The immediate benefit is the feel-good of the warm autumn sun on your skin!
