Being a mother, I have learned exercise is more about self-care than fun.
I enjoy many things in my life. I enjoy my work and working with you in fitness; I enjoy my family and friends, my food, my reading, my weekends and my sleep!
I am sure you will notice that exercise isn’t on the list. I am still waiting for the “enjoyment of exercise” to kick in, perhaps one day it will……but I am not there yet.
I have come to realise that the more I look for fun in exercise, the less I find it. In fact, for a good while, exercising became hard because I couldn’t understand the attraction or the fun.
Thankfully, I didn’t give up, and now exercise for me is about body awareness and self-care.
Exercise is important to me because it allows me to continue to enjoy my life with gratitude for the sense of well-being I have today.
Exercising self-care is a mother’s role
I find Mother’s day a perplexing day, particularly after I became a mother. I am not sure why and how the day’s celebrations shifted from my mother to me.
Every year I ponder the same puzzle, a mother’s love can never be expressed in a single act or product, not even in the event of becoming a mother.
Mother’s day can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.
I like the idea of the original festival of mother’s day much better than its modern interpretation.
The concept was that we are on this earth because of our mothers and every person that has ever lived irrespective of their culture or belief has/had a mother. It is what unifies us with all living creatures big or small.
Therefore, if you are looking for the meaning of motherhood this mother’s day look deep inside yourself and find your caring mother and listen to her words –
- “You need to look after yourself by maintaining your health through physical exercise and eating well – whether you like it or not!“
I leave you now with a thought for what all mothers want on mother’s day, and that is for their children (that’s you the child of your mother) to stay healthy and live life well.
.
Live well with fitness
