I have recently been pondering a few questions: What is dementia? Who is most susceptible to this life-altering condition? What can I do to lower my chances?
The simple answer for maintaining brain health is without a doubt; daily exercise. In particular for those over 65, by adding 2-3 strength training sessions to a weekly exercise routine may cut the risk of dementia in half!
Dementia is not a particular disease but is a general term for the loss in ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with everyday activities.
Symptoms include forgetfulness, disorientation, misplacing things, difficulty following conversations etc. I often suffer from many of these symptoms, and I worry that I will develop dementia or already have!
I’m very mindful against the idea “it won’t happen to me,” because as a female, I am more likely to develop dementia.
Getting older as a woman doesn’t need to be frightening; there are ways to prevent dementia, such as learning a second language. Studies have shown that people who challenge their brains through learning a new language tend to have lower rates of dementia and memory loss later in life regardless of education levels or gender.
But what if you can’t be motivated to learn ancient Latin?
The excellent news is; exercise and healthy eating also reduce the risk of dementia. A great reason to start our 9-minute program and join those early Monday morning Zoom classes!
