Winter is ideal for starting a fitness program. Winter training places less stress on the body’s regulatory system and allows for training at a higher intensity without the rapid onset of heat exhaustion.
Many major marathons held in colder months are held for this reason; an example is the August running of Sydney’s City to Surf.
Winter is notorious for derailing fitness and weight loss goals. The human species biologically programmed to store fat and hibernate in winter will negate any mild attempt. Increasing intensity and cardiovascular activity will “trick” metabolism to work at a summer rate.
Winter fitness training goes beyond achieving specific goals, like climbing a mountain, the momentary sensation of reaching the summit rarely replaces the exhilaration of the climb.
Sir Edmund Hillary, who in 1956 was the first climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest, wrote, “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.”
This winter conquer your desire to hibernate. Rug up, get out there and keep fit, healthy and warm!
Live well and eat well!
